How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

Vehicle driving through snow

Canadian winters aren’t only rough on us, but on our vehicles as well. To make it through the season with a fully functioning vehicle, you need to make sure it’s prepared. This includes checking your wiper blades, installing winter tires, inspecting your car battery and lights, and preparing an emergency kit. It’s important to take action before winter fully sets in. Not only will this protect your vehicle better, but it will also help ensure you don’t have to deal with any vehicle problems in frigid temperatures. 1. Check Your Wiper Blades

Before the cold sets in, make sure your wipers are in working condition and suitable for winter. Wiper blades wear down over time, and to clean your windshield of snow and grime properly, you need to make sure your wiper blades are in working order. Consider getting a pair that’s designed for the winter season to take on extreme weather.

2. Switch to Winter Tires

Winter tires are a must to handle snow and ice. Compared to summer and all-season tires, they provide better traction in the colder months. Winter tires are made from a material that can hold its shape in cold weather. They feature a deep tread and wide grooves, allowing them to “bite” snow and ice. It’s recommended to swap your tires when the weather starts dropping below 7 degrees Celsius.

3. Inspect Your Battery

The cold is tough on vehicle batteries. To make sure it’s prepared for winter, you should have it inspected for its age and any signs of damage. Car batteries typically last between three and five years. You don’t want to find out it’s time for a new battery in the middle of a snowstorm. Get ahead of the issue by visiting our Kia-certified technicians.

4. Check Your Lights

Another thing you should inspect before winter is the lights on your vehicle. Visibility reduces with inclement weather conditions, and your vehicle’s lights might be the only indication of your presence to others. You should have a professional test out your headlights, taillights, and brake lights before the snow sets in.

5. Prepare a Winter Kit

The weather can be unpredictable. To stay prepared, put together a kit you can keep in your car. Include things like a snow brush, booster cables, and a shovel. You should also pack snacks, a flashlight, and a portable phone charger in case you’re stuck in your car for a long period.
