At this time each year, winter tires are installed on your vehicle. However, there comes a time when you need to think about replacing them. But when? Here are three things to watch for.

1 - The tread

The tires on your vehicle have a tread that shows grooves. It is through these that snow, water and slush is evacuated in winter. The tread depth is approximately 14/32 inches when the tire is new. Over time, the tread wears down and the depth of the grooves reduces. When it reaches 7/32nd of an inch, it is recommended to change the tire because the grooves will no longer be able to properly evacuate the elements.

2 - The behavior

Your tires talk to you. In fact, their behavior gives you signs. New, good snow tires bite into it, grip surfaces easily and give you a reassuring ride. As soon as you begin to notice signs of weakness, such as difficulty moving the vehicle from a neutral position, less biting in corners where the front end is trying to chase, more slipping, look no further; your tires have lost their effectiveness and it's time to replace them.

3 - Date of manufacture

Tires don't last forever. Some are more durable than others, of course. However, analysts agree that after five years, rubber no longer has the same priorities as it once did. So, watch the year your tire was manufactured to get a sense of when it was made. The year is usually written on the sidewall.
